Teoria do apego ou teoria da vinculação é a teoria que descreve a dinâmica de longo-termo em relacionamentos entre humanos. Seu princípio mais importante declara que um recém-nascido precisa desenvolver um relacionamento com, pelo menos, um cuidador primário para que seu desenvolvimento social e emocional ocorra normalmente. A teoria do apego é um estudo multidisciplinar que abrange os campos da teoria psicológica, evolutiva e etológica. Imediatamente após a Segunda Guerra Mundial, as crianças órfãs e sem lar apresentaram muitas dificuldades, e o psiquiatra e psicanalista John Bowlby foi convidado pela Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU) a escrever um panfleto sobre o assunto. Posteriormente, ele formulou a teoria do apego. Os bebês apegam-se a adultos que são sensíveis e receptivos às relações sociais com eles, e que permanecem como cuidadores compatíveis por alguns meses durante o período de cerca de seis meses a dois anos de idade. Quando um bebê começa a engatinhar e a andar, ele começa a usar as figuras de apego (pessoas conhecidas) como uma base segura para explorar além e voltar em seguida.
